Has anyone here modified these before?

I’ve got a 12v dune racer and a 6v Viper, both were free and neither have a working battery or charger...

Double the voltage, double the fun. Just get 2 small 12v for the 12 volt and wire them in series and get a single 12v for the 6v. More better.

There are folks out there that add drill motors in lieu of the original motors and go with their battery packs to power them.

Just be careful if you decide to do a 24v conversion on the 12v unit. The motors and gears may not last long. I think 18v is the highest “recommended” by power wheels tuners.
